Cruzeiro’s president Gilvan de Pinho Tavares has denied that Santos are close to signing Argentine midfielder Walter Montillo.
Montillo, 28, is rumoured to already have agreed a deal with Santos and is looking forward to linking up with Brazilian superstar Neymar at Vila Belmiro. However, the latest offer from Santos was not accepted by Cruzeiro as they felt it was well below the player’s worth.
“Do not believe this information that we are close to a deal,” Tavares told Lancenet!
“For over a week we did not talk with any representative of Santos, the talks were stalled and there has been no progress in recent days.
“We had no interest in the proposal that Santos gave last week and it is not true that Montillo is close to signing with Santos.”
Santos are looking to rebuild their midfield over the close season after losing both Elano, to Grêmio, and Ganso, to São Paulo, during the second half of last season.
