Lucas Leiva delivered an outstanding performance as Liverpool ran out comfortable winners over a lacklustre Fulham to climb up the table.

The Brazil midfielder ably controlled the midfield battle alongside captain Steven Gerrard before leaving the pitch in the 82nd minute to applause from the Liverpool fans.

A virtuoso display from much maligned winger Stewart Downing secured the three points on a cold and rainy night at Anfield.

Martin Skrtel opened the scoring for the Reds as he volleyed in the first goal from a Gerrard corner.

Downing then stepped up to deliver a sublime reverse pass, cutting the Fulham defence open, for Gerrard to slot in for Liverpool’s second.

The creator then turned goalscorer after the break as Downing rifled in a 20 yard shot that went straight through Mark Schwarzer’s hands and into the net.

Fulham were dire on the night and their slack defending was taken advantage of once more in injury time as Luís Suarez converted a Jose Enrique cutback for Liverpool’s fourth of the evening.
