Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez has revealed he will give David Luiz more chances in midfield once defender John Terry returns from injury.

The Brazil international has had issues in central defence, due to his attacking tendencies, and has subsequently been used in a midfield role in recent games.

However, Luiz’s defensive partner John Terry is yet to return form a knee injury suffered in November, which means the Brazilian will remain at centre-back until his return.

Benitez said: “I didn"t want to play David Luiz in midfield in the second game in Japan [Club World Cup] as it was too demanding.

“Centre-backs run less than midfielders and he was keen to play there but he would not have the same fresh legs so we decided to play him in defence and he was quite good.

“[Once John Terry returns] it will be easier to use him as a midfielder if necessary.

“I think he can do both really well. He wants to be involved. He can do both well."
