Palmeiras president Arnaldo Tirone has revealed there is confusion over whether Boca Juniors midfielder Juan Román Riquelme will join the São Paulo club next season.

Riquelme, 34, has not played for Boca since they lost the Copa Libertadores final in July to Corinthians and has been linked with a number of Brazilian clubs since announcing that he would not play again for the Argentine giants.

“We have offered Riquelme a deal,” Tirone told Lancenet!

“But I do not know if he’s playing, if he has a contract.

“Four months ago we had also thought about it. It is very common offering player at this time.”

The report by Lancenet! suggests that Palmeiras sent an offer to the player’s agent on Thursday but the former Barcelona star has yet to decide where his future lies.

Santos, Flamengo and Cruzeiro have all expressed an interest in the player and, despite his contract at La Bombonera being suspened, the Boca Juniors supporters have not given up hope that the number 10 will reverse his decision and return to the team.

And despite his age, Palmeiras see Riquelme as the ideal player to replace their injured Chilean midfielder Jorge Valdivia, who they are keen to see leave as soon as possible.
