Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hailed Lucas Leiva’s return from injury and sees him as bringing stability to the Reds midfield.

Lucas started his first game since August in Liverpool’s impressive 1-0 win over Southampton in which they dominated their opponents from start to finish.

Rodgers told reporters after the match: “With Lucas you can see all of a sudden with the right profile player in the right position it frees up the offensive threats.

“I thought the rhythm and balance of the game was great with him there. Until we get the exact profile of player in each position – as we saw with Lucas today – we will still be building towards where we want to go.

“It’s a steep climb but I hope people can see now we’re on the move.”

Liverpool are 11th in the Premier League as they enter December, which is a key month for the club as they face largely midtable opponents as they look to climb the table.
