Wolfsburg midfielder Diego is looking to sign a new contract at the Bundesliga club despite reported interest from Atlético Madrid.

The 27-year-old, who moved from Juventus to the German side in 2010 for a club record of €15.5 million, currently has a deal that ends in June 2014.

Diego has admitted he is hoping to sign an extension at the Volkswagen Arena, despite interest from Atletico Madrid, who he went on loan to last season.

Speaking after the 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Sunday, Diego said to reporters:

“Yes, I am working towards it [the contract extension].

“First of all, we have to make sure that we are successful in the current season, but if we reach our goals, the future will be good as well."

Wolfsburg are currently 13th in the league and are without a permanent manager having sacked Felix Magath at the end of last month.

Lorenz-Gunther Kostner took over the role as a caretaker boss and Klaus Allofs recently became die Wolfe’s new sporting director, who Diego dedicated Sunday’s victory to.

“I am very happy for Klaus, that we were able to start [his tenure] by getting the three points," he added.
