Palmeiras relegated to Série B
Palmeiras have been relegated to Série B for the second time in 10 years after Portuguesa drew 2-2 with Grêmio this evening.
The eight-time champions needed to beat Flamengo in Volta Redonda yesterday, but former Palmeiras striker Vagner Love scored in the 89th minute to give the Rubro-Negro a point.
Portuguesa were on track to record a 2-0 win at home to second-place Grêmio but Marquinhos set up André Lima and Zé Roberto to earn the visiting side a point at the Estádio do Canindé.
The result means Palmeiras are now seven points adrift of Portuguesa in 16th and nine from Bahia, who won 1-0 against Ponte Preta, with just two games remaining.
Therefore, the Copa do Brasil champions will join Figueirense and Atlético Goianiense in the second division next season, following relegation in 2002.
However, their title win under Luiz Felipe Scolari earlier this year means Palmeiras will also compete in the Copa Libertadores next season.
