Grêmio star Elano has admitted his error and apologised for assaulting the assistant official in Thursday night’s Copa Sul-Americana defeat to Millonarios of Columbia after the home side were awarded a controversial last minute penalty which knocked Grêmio out of the competition.

Elano, 31, took to Twitter to send the message, which read: “Very sad, sorry everyone. I was wrong!”

And teammate Souza, who is on-loan from Porto, also took to the social network site to apologise to fans for the elimination which means that Grêmio will finish another season without a trophy.

“I’m so sad because I have the idea of staying here for many years and did not want to add more years to these ten years without a title.”

With the title already gone to Fluminense, all that is left for the Porto Alegre side to compete for is second place in the Brasileirão, starting with an away fixture this sunday against Portuguesa.
