Schalke 04 v Arsenal: André Santos dropped for Gunners
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reacted to the criticism over the recent performances of Brazilian fullback André Santos by dropping the player for his side's vital Uefa Champions League tie away in Germany to Schalke 04, replacing him with Laurent Koscielny and moving Thomas Vermaelen to left back.
Santos, 29, has been in hot water since the weekend's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United after he was seen taking the shirt from former Arsenal star Robin van Persie as he entered the tunnel at half-time. The move was seen as highly unprofessional given the nature of Arsenal's first half performance, Santos's own performance and that van Persie, who left the Gunners in the summer, is something of a hate figure now with the clubs supporters.
Wenger is believed to have had strong words with the former Fenerbahçe star over his conduct and the player himself has apologised to the rest of the Arsenal squad.
However, it is the performances of the full back that have been most worrying in recent weeks. Santos was given a 1 out of 10 rating by The Times for his performance at Old Trafford on Saturday.
