Former Brazil coach Parreira laments Adriano departure
Former Seleção coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has lamented troubled striker Adriano's departure from Flamengo after missing a fourth training session in one month.
Adriano played some of his best football under Parreira's guidance, culminating in winning the 2004 Copa America and being voted the tournament's best player having scored seven goals on the way.
The former Brazil coach told reporters: "It's a shame that a player who is only 30 years old is taking his career down this path.
"When he played for me in the Confederations Cup and Copa America [in 2004], he proved to be a player of incredible technical ability but he put on too much weight."
Despite the criticism, Parreira wished the player luck in his future: "He decides his life now. I picked up the newspaper today and saw him saying he did not want to play. He is deciding his fate."
