The Real Madrid defender, who sustained the injury in training on Sunday, will leave for Spain later on Monday as the Seleção continue preparations for Tuesday’s fixture with Japan.

The news was confirmed to reporters by national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar, who added that the defender may need surgery to prevent reoccurrence, but that the decision would be left to his club side to arrange.

Marcelo’s absence creates an issue for manager Mano Menezes, with fellow full-backs Dani Alves and Alex Sandro already withdrawn due to injury.

With Barcelona’s Adriano now the only fit full-back in the squad, it is likely that either Dedé or Leandro Castan will play as a makeshift full-back against the Samurai Blue.

The news also brings consequences for Spanish giants Real Madrid, with alternative left-back Fabio Coentrão ruled out for the coming weeks with a torn hamstring sustained on Portugal duty this weekend.
