Corinthians’ Emerson Sheik could be ruled out of the upcoming Club World Cup against potential opponents Chelsea after suffering a knee injury in their 1-1 draw against Portuguesa.

Emerson was stretchered off after just 20 minutes of play to be replaced by Giovanni, much to the concern of the crowd.

The player told reporters: “I felt a nuisance differently. Thought you were going with the body warm, but the pains are strong. Hopefully it’s nothing.”

The club doctor revealed the player had a scan yesterday and said: “It was a knee injury, it is sensitive. We are concerned.”

Emerson has been plagued with injuries this season, and as such is his importance to the team, coach Tite had planned to preserve the striker’s fitness for the upcoming Club World Cup.

“I’m worried about Emerson,” said the coach, “Notice that the pitch was hard, the input is strong, and we need to evaluate it. Hope it is not serious.”

Corinthians are preparing for the Club World Cup where English giants Chelsea could be among the teams they face in December.
