Palmeiras coach Gilson Kleina has urged his players to ‘believe" that they can avoid relegation after finding themselves nine points from safety after their 1-0 defeat to Coritiba.

The coach told reporters: “You have to believe. Became more difficult, but we have to believe. Depends only on us and we will work, we believe that we still can [avoid relegation].

“We know what we have to do. Let us work and we believe it. The fans and especially we as players, we have to beiieve."

There are nine games left to go in the Brasileirão but Gilson Kleina is confident of picking up points: “You need to win away from home, because we have to recover these points. But you can not give it up yet."

The coach has only been in charge of struggling Palmeiras for five games but the club are facing the threat of relegation with the prospect of having to pick up points in the majority of their remaining nine games.

The Verdão, who hosted the fixture on Thursday night, were downed by a late penalty by former Fenerbahçe striker Deivid which moved Coritiba eight points clear of Sport Recife and the drop-zone.
