The President of Cruzeiro, Gilvan de Pinho Tavares, has said he does not believe the former Fenerbache midfielder Alex da Souza has reached an agreement with Coritiba. The rumour was circulated earlier this week by the media, but Gilvan says the player has said to him that this is not true.
He said: “I talked with Alex. If I had heard from others what he told me, that’s fine, but as I talked to him, I know that’s not true. I’ve heard the board of Coritiba have yet to talk with Alex and that he will only decide when arriving in Brazil.
“I’ll take our proposal and to him and we will make every effort to bring him back to Cruzeiro.”
The President said that Cruzeiro has a better chance of fighting for titles than Coritiba, and, according to Gilvan, this is one of the main factors that will help the 35-year-old in choosing his new club.
“From what I heard from Alex, is that he has two demands. First, the security for his family. And then he wants to come to play on a team that will fight for titles. I know that Cruzeiro is better placed than Coritiba in this aspect. On 20th October he will give us his answer,” he added.
Alex has had two spells with Cruzeiro already. The first of these was for the 2001 season when on-loan from Palmeiras and then he returned to the club after an ill-fated loan spell with Italian side Parma and stayed until 2004, winning the Brasileirão in 2003.
