Two goals from Luis Fabiano and a superb long range volley from on-loan Arsenal midfielder Denílson helped São Paulo to a comfortable 3-0 victory over fierce rivals Palmeiras in O Choque Rei (The Big Derby) on Saturday night.

Denílson’s strike, his first for the club in 89 appearances, was sandwiched either side of Fabiano’s two goals but it was the midfielders volley that was very much the highlight of a one-sided derby affair.

Palmeiras finished the game with just 9 men on the field after Artur was sent off for 2 yellow cards – both for fouls on Osvaldo – and then Jorge Valdívia had to leave the field through injury.

This victory for Ney Franco’s team strengthens their hold on 5th spot in the table and puts further pressure on Vasco da Gama, who currently occupy 4th position and the final Copa Libertadores qualification spot.

This defeat leaves Palmeiras in 18th spot and the threat of relegation to Serie B is looking more likely with each passing game.
