Waldemar Lemos as been dismissed as head coach of Sport Club do Recife after two consecutive heavy defeats to Corinthians and Portuguesa, 3-0 and 5-1 respectively, left the club in the relegation zone.

The fate of Lemos, 58, was sealed late on Friday evening after the club’s directors reacted to Thursday’s humiliating defeat to Portuguesa by wielding the axe on the coach, despite Lemos only taking control of the team in August and making a relatively good start with just 1 defeat in his first 8 games, including victories over Santos and Cruzeiro.

The news was announced on Saturday morning via a short statement issued to the clubs official website which stated that Lemos had been removed as coach with imeediate effect and that his assistant coach, Gustavo Bueno, would take control of the first team until a new coach had been appoined.

Sport will return to Brasileirão action on Wednesday when they host Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s Grêmio, who currently sit 3rd in the table.
