Palmeiras director of football Cesar Sampaio has confirmed that Palmeiras have now made an official approach to former star Alex de Souza over a return to the club.

Alex, 35, left Fenerbahce earlier this week in an exit hotly disputed by both parties and is thought to give preference to former sides Coritiba, Palmeiras and Cruzeiro as his next club.

It is the Verdão, though, who appear to have made the first move, with the club looking to strengthen ahead of their 2013 Copa Libertadores campaign, having qualified by virtue of winning the Copa do Brasil.

“We have not made a formal proposal, but there is official interest,” Sampaio told reporters. “He knows the club and has a big reputation here.

“As a professional. he said he must first resolve some paperwork and family issues. He was flattered by Palmeiras’ interest, but has not given any indication yet. We await his arrival to open negotiations.”
