PSV Eindhoven’s Brazilian defender Marcelo has signed a new three-year deal with the club, before celebrating the news with a goal in the side’s 3-0 win over Napoli in the Europa League.

Marcelo, 25, scored in the 52nd minute of the tie at PSV Stadion to help the Dutch side to their memorable win and is now tied to the club until the summer of 2016.

The news comes as a relief to the Eredivisie giants who could have been forced to watch the Brazilian leave on a free next summer, after over 100 appearances for the club.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new long-term contract and I will keep on giving my best for PSV,” Marcelo told reporters earlier in the day.

“I train hard to improve myself and want to play as many games as possible. We all work hard to improve and I think we are the best team in Holland.”

The club’s technical director Marcel Brands added: “He had one year to run on his old contract; we opted to offer him a three-year contract extension. I’m delighted he has signed.

“At first, he needed time to our style of play, but he has meanwhile become a respected first-team regular. Marcelo has got that winning mentality. He is still relatively young for a defender and will be given the chance to progress further.”
