U20 Copa do Brasil: Corinthians fight-back on tournament debut
The new Under-20 Copa do Brasil tournament kicked-off in fine style on Wednesday as Vasco secured a 1-0 away win over Ponte Preta, while Corinthians fought-back from 2-0 down to draw with Avaí.
Whilst the tournament may have kicked-off in Campinas, it was the match at the Ressacada stadium in Florianópolis that was attracting all the attention as Copa São Paulo winners Corinthians travelled to take on Avaí in the first-round opening leg.
The pre-tournament favourites, though, quickly found themselves in trouble, falling 2-0 down in the opening ten minutes to a vibrant Avaí side, thanks to goals from Tauã and Peu. The Timão took control of the game in the second-half, though, and quickly pulled a goal back through man of the match Giovanni.
The goal was a dagger through the heart of the Avaí resistence and just four minutes later Corinthians were level, thanks to an own-goal from unfortunate substitute Wallace. The Paulista side will now return home for the second-leg in the knowledge that they have secured two away goals from their trip to Santa Catarina.
Giovanni, who has featured for the first-team this season, told reporters: "It was a difficult game because we had to comeback to draw, having fallen behind. The pitch was very big and it was tough, but we played with spirit. We must now work to secure a good result and continue in the competition."
In Campinas, Vasco missed an early chance to take the lead as Romário squandered a first-half penalty and were forced to wait until the second period for forward Marlone to secure a 1-0 victory
