Flamengo striker Liédson believes that his team should be congratulated on their performance, despite defeat to city rivals Fluminense on Sunday night.

Former Sporting striker Liédson, 34, saw his side squander countless opportunities to take at least a point from the game, including missing a penalty and seeing a Vagner Love strike chalked-off for offside.

Despite the result, in a game in which Flamengo were looking to notch-up a third consecutive win, the experienced centre-forward was proud of the showing.

“Fluminense capitalised on our error, they scored from a set-piece and that was all,” Liédson told Globo reporters post-match.

“We missed chances, had a goal disallowed and missed a penalty, so we must take positives from the performance.

“That was how the game went, we deserved a better result. We could not get the equaliser, but we should be congratulated for the performance.”

Liédson was also full of praise for the Nação, or ‘nation’, as Flamengo’s red-and-black army of supporters are known:

“The crowd also should be congratulated,” he added. “They supported the team until the end and even applauded after the game. Players are more confident when they hear this type of support.”
