Brazilian attacking-midfielder Marlos scored twice as Metalist thrashed Obolon to progress to the last 16 of the Ukranian Cup.

Marlos, 24, transferred to Ukraine in January and was involved in the side’s impressive run in last season’s Europa League, alongside fellow Brazilians Cleiton Xavier, Fininho and Taison.

The quartet have since been joined by former Corinthians forward Willian and the side ran riot in their away cup tie.

Marlos opened the scoring after just three minutes to set the tone for the encounter, before adding a second after Andriy Vorobey had doubled the side’s lead. Experienced midfielder Oleg Shelayev would later complete the scoring with the side’s fourth.

“The win was special for me,” Marlos told Lancenet. “It was the first time since coming to Ukraine that I have scored twice.

“Expectations are high and we will now fight for the league and cup, as well as competing in the Europa League.”

Elsewhere, Shakhtar also scored four to defeat arch-rivals Dinamo Kyiv 4-1. Brazilians Luiz Adriano, Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho were amongst the scorers.

Former Vasco star Alex said of his goal: “It was really important in the closing stages of the first-half. It lifted the spirits of the whole team. At the moment, Shakhtar are ahead of Dynamo.”
