Rômulo, 21, moved to Russia only this summer, but will be out for approximately six months after an impressive start to life in the country, including scoring a Champions League goal against Barcelona.
The injury is a major blow for Brazil ahead of the Confederations Cup 2013, with Rômulo and Sandro having formed a steady midfield partnership for Brazil in recent times, including the Olympic Games.
“It’s the first time I have suffered a serious injury,” Rômulo told Globo Esporte.
“It was in the second-half, from a corner near the end of the game. I jumped and, when I landed, an opponent fell on my knee.
“I was very upset. I was confident of a run in the Champions League. As well as missing out on that, I will also miss a number of Brazil games in this period.”
