Gilson Kleina announced as new Palmeiras managerKleina's goal this season will be to secure safety in the Brasileirão for Palmeiras
Palmeiras have confirmed Gilson Kleina as their new manager to replace the recently sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Scolari was dismissed with the club deep in relegation trouble, sitting in 19th place with just 14 games of the season remaining.
Emerson Leão, Jorginho and Falcão were all linked with the post, but Palmeiras have instead paid around $500,000 to secure the services of Kleina.
The 44-year-old left his former side Ponte Preta in an impressive tenth place after helping them to secure promotion to the Brasileirão in 2011.
Kleina's contract runs until at least December 2013 and his salary will be more than double what he was receiving at Ponte Preta.
He has worked with a number of clubs in Brazil, as well as with Marseille as a youth coach in 2000.
His first game in charge of his new side comes this Saturday when Palmeiras travel to Figueirense.
