Former AC Milan player Digão has signed for MLS side New York Red Bulls after a succesful trial period at the club.

Digão, 27, is the younger brother of Brazil icon Kaká and is the man reputedly responsible for his nickname, having failed to pronounce his full-name, Ricardo.

The centre-back struggled to secure first-team opportunities in Italy, but has now been given the chance to forge a career for himself in the United States.

“Rodrigo, he’s on trial, the big, tall guy,” coach Hans Backe said last week. “He just had his testing today, a fitness test, training. He’s a free agent, Brazilian, played in Italy. Belongs to AC Milan, but been on loan to Serie B Lecce. He played some games, but mostly for AC Milan’s reserves.

“He’s done quite well with us. When you pick up players during this transfer window, offseason, it’s about fitness. We don’t have that much time, seven games to go and then the playoffs. So that’s why we made the test today, and we’ll probably get the answer later today.

“But he’s done well, a solid centerback, good in the air of course because of his height, composed, good to build up.”
