
Ex Arsenal midfielder Edu helps unveil new youth tournament
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have officially unveiled a new Under-20 Copa do Brasil tournament, to start this October.
The 32-team Copa will run until December, complementing the existing Under-20 Brasileirão tournament in the latter months of the year
A fixed calendar for Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 levels is also planned, with the CBF taking a more central role in the country's youth development schemes.
The Copa São Paulo youth tournament each January has proved youth football to be a marketable prospect in the country and the clubs are hoping that the new system will complement existing tournaments in bringing through better prepared youth talent.
Corinthians' director of football Edu, once of Arsenal, told reporters: "I came out the youth categories and know how important it is to have competitions of this level.
"In my role now, it is important that we look after players with a new, non-traditional, calendar. I'm sure it will be a success."
