Following his starring role in the Brasileirão this season and a debut call-up to the Brazil national team set-up on Monday night, Atlético Mineiro midfielder Bernard has been rewarded with a new contract at the Minas Gerais club.

Bernard, who turned 20 last week, has agreed a new five-year contract at Atlético, extending a previous contract which was set to expire in 2014.

No further details have been released of the contract terms agreed, but it is assumed that the latest emerging star of Brazilian football has been given greatly increased financial terms to ensure his loyalty to the club.

Earlier this week, following an inspired brace in victory over Palmeiras at the weekend, Bernard was the subject of praise from team-mate Ronaldinho. The former-Barcelona idol believes Brazil is currently witnessing the birth of a special talent

In the 2012 Brasileirão, Bernard has contributed six goals and five assists to  his side as Atlético lie second in the table, two points behind leaders Fluminense.
