Udinese sporting director Fabrizio Larini has denied claims that the club have omitted Maicosuel from their 25-man Europa League squad as punishment for costing them a place in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old midfielder came under fire after his careless penalty miss in a shootout against Sporting Braga denied the Bianconeri qualification for the group stage of Europe’s most prestigious competition.

”The number of players who can be inserted is limited, we needed to make some technical and tactical choices to make our Europa League squad as homogeneous as possible,” Larini told Udinese Channel.

”After due evaluations, we thought it was better to include a player with particular offensive features such as Ranegie, whereas we have different options for the role of attacking midfielder.

”The exclusion of Maicosuel is not a punishment for the failed penalty at all.

”Udinese are used to waiting for the players coming from other championships and this omission doesn’t mean that he has failed.”

Maicosuel joined Udiense for an undisclosed fee from Botafogo in July.
