Brasileirão round-up: Fluminense defeat Vasco to join Atlético-MG at the summit

Vasco 1-2 Fluminense

Fluminense have joined Atlético Mineiro at the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro after defeating their local rivals Vasco 2-1 at the Engenhão.

Thiago Neves gave the Tricolor Carioca the lead in the 71st minute before Gum accidently converted Juninho's cross into his own net no less than sixty seconds later.

However, fortunately for the defender, Thiago Neves found the target again four minutes from time, this time curling in a free kick at the near post.

The result means Fluminense are now level on points with Atlético Mineiro, but the Belo Horizonte side still remain in first place due to the fact they have won one more game than their title rivals.

In addition, the Galo will have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table this evening as they are due to take on their local rivals Cruzeiro.

Palmeiras 1-2 Santos

Santos have climbed up to ninth in the Brasileirao after beating their cross-town rivals Palmeiras 2-1 at the Pacaembu.

The Verdao took the lead through Correa's 40th minute strike before Neymar smashed in a long range free kick to level the score three minutes later.

Neymar, who helped Brazil win silver at the Olympic Games earlier this summer, went on to score the winner just after the hour mark, unleashing a relatively weak shot, which had bounced off the post and then into the back of the net.

Ponte Preta 2-1 Portuguesa

Ponte Preta defeated their local rivals Portugeusa 2-1 in Campinas.

The home side took the lead through Giancarlo's 5th minute bicycle kick, before Bruno Mineiro headed in Ivans in swinging free kick midway through the opening half.

With just seven minutes remaining on the clock, though, Giancarlo found the back of the net again, this time heading in Nikão's perfectly weighted cross from close range.
