Police in Brazil have freed the mother of football star Rogerio, three days after she was kidnapped by gunmen.

Ines Fidelis Regis, 57, was found apparently unharmed in a house in the coastal town of Caraguatatuba, in Sao Paulo state.

During the operation to free Mrs Fidelis, whose son plays for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, a woman was arrested and a machine gun seized.

She was the fourth Brazilian player’s mother to be abducted in recent months.

Police said they found Mrs Fidelis after being tipped off, but did not say by whom.

The kidnappers had not contacted the family, and no ransom was paid, they added.

Earlier this month, gunmen abducted the mother of Brazilian international Luis Fabiano in Campinas, also in the state of Sao Paulo. She is still being held captive.

The wave of kidnappings began last December, when the mother of Santos striker Robinho was seized at a family gathering. She was released unharmed several weeks later after a ransom was paid.

Last month, the mother of Sao Paulo striker Grafite spent a day as a hostage after being abducted near the city of Sao Paulo.
