Flamengo enquire about Riquelme

Flamengo director Zinho has revealed that he has contacted the agent of Juan Roman Riquelme to enquire about the possibility of the midfielder joining the club.

The 34-year is currently a free agent after bringing an end to his second spell at Boca Juniors last Thursday following their defeat to Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores final.

Zinho has admitted that Riquelme is a option for Flamengo, but insisted that Werder Bremen playmaker Diego is the club's number one transfer target.

''We have made an offer for Diego and we will wait until Monday or Tuesday," Zinho told reporters.

''He has a very high salary, so it will not be easy to sign him, only if we have an investor to back us up until the end.

''Riquelme? I have not made any offer for him. The only concrete offer is for Diego.

''But it is obvious that Riquelme is a player we are interested in. I would open Flamengo's doors to him.

"I have spoken with his agent after seeing the news [that he had quit Boca] and I asked if it was possible to sign him."
