Cavalieri endured a difficult start to his career at Laranjeiras when he arrived from Cesena in 2010, but this year he has played a key role in helping the Tricolor reach the Carioca state championship final, having been the hero in a penalty shootout against rivals Botafogo.

The 29-year-old also denied Jésus Dátalo from the spot in Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores 0-0 draw with Internacional, which has helped give Fluminense a slight advantage when they host the Colorado in the second-leg of their last-16 tie.

”Diego should be congratulated,” Fred told reporters. ”He is decisive for Fluminense. This is a good for the side, because every good team starts with a great goalkeeper, and that’s the case for us.”
