Brazilian legend Pelé claims that his country have never won a gold medal in football at the Olympic games because he never played in the competition.

Brazil have won the FIFA World Cup a record five times, but surprisingly their best achievement in football at the Olympics is a silver medal - which the South American country have won on four occasions.

''This is a medal that Brazil need to win,'' Pelé said at a press conference. ''Do you know exactly why we don't have a gold medal? When I started playing I was just sixteen years old.

''When we started, whoever was a professional footballer, they were not allowed to play at the Olympics. Brazil never won a gold medal in football at the Olympics because I never played.''
