Kerlon, 23, is still owned by Italian giants Inter Milan, having appeared destined for greatness at youth-level, but has found his career torn to pieces by consecutive injuries over the past five years.

“Kerlon is a player of great quality,” said Cruzeiro striker Anselmo Ramon. ‘Everyone in football knows that, it doesn’t need me to say it.

“I hope he can come out on top. When he suffers some more serious injuries, he comes to Cruzeiro for treatment. I hope God will bless him so that he no longer suffer this cruelty.”

Goalkeeper Fabio, played alongside Kerlon from the beginning of his career, praised the ‘little seal’, known in this way for his distinctive dribbling technique.

“I have always been together with Kerlon from the beginning of his professional career.

“At Cruzeiro he really showed his quality at youth level but unfortunately, he lost a lot of time with injuries. This has really hurt.

“I am happy to see him play. We know he will do the best for his side, as we will do the best for us, because we want to help Cruzeiro.”

Unfortunately it seems there may not be an on-the-pitch reunion, as Kerlon is currently training separately from the first-team, as he recovers from yet another injury in his short career thus far.

The match-up takes place on Thursday at 21.30 GMT.
