
Copa SP: Corinthians crowned champions thanks to captain fantastic
Fluminense had taken the lead early in the second-half when Corinthians goalkeeper Matheus made a terrible blunder to drop the ball from Marcos Júnior's cross, allowing Michael to turn home to give the Tricolor the lead.
Corinthians had on balance been the better side in a tight encounter, but both sides were struggling to make any attacking inroads. Yet, the Timão did not collapse in a manner so common at youth level, they persisted and got their just rewards.
In the 66th minute, they were level. Antônio Carlos came forward from the back to rise highest and power home a header from Matheuzinho's corner. Ironically, the defender was formerly on the books of the Rio de Janeiro club.
The São Paulo giants were resurgent, storming forward at every opportunity and causing Fluminense frequent problems. The goal would not come. However, just two minutes from time, captain fantastic Antônio Carlos rose highest once more to drag his side to the title.
Corinthians were ecstatic, Fluminense dejected. Neither side deserved to lose an enthralling encounter, but it was Corinthians who added yet another title to their collection.
