Fluminense were the first of the Carioca giants in action, emerging 3-0 winners against Friburguense. Goals from Araújo, Rafael Moura and Thiago Carleto were enough for the Tricolor to progress. Read a full report here.

Also on Saturday were Flamengo who, as with Fluminense, played a reserve side in their 4-0 win over Bonsucesso. Two goals from Jael set the ball rolling for Mengão, before Camacho and Adryan added two more in the second-half. More on Adryan’s goal here.

On Sunday, Botafogo also ran-out convincing 3-1 winners over minnows Resende. Two goals from Loco Abreu and one for attacking midfielder Maicosuel were enough to see off their rivals, who scored from a deflected free-kick. Full-report available here.

At the same hour, Vasco beat Americano 2-0 with goals from Alecsandro and Fágner. Unlike the Fla-Flu duo, the São Januário were treated to first-teams, with full-back Fágner the star-man. Read more here.
