On the pitch, Muricy had given the striker a verbal lashing for his error. Neymar had appealed for a decision that was given the way of the opponent, with the Santos man booked for his trouble.

The 19-year old proceeded to congratulate the referee and applaud his decision in an ironic manner, before seeing red and heading down the tunnel in disgrace.

It had been just one of a series of incidents involving the referee, who had earlier given a penalty to either side and sent-off Santos right-back Crystian, all for offences that seemingly only the man in the middle himself is aware of. He had a nightmare.

“I talked to him and said ‘you can not do that’,” boss Muricy Ramalho said of Neymar. “No matter what mistakes the referee makes, you must accept it.

“I said to him: ‘You are ace. You have your own way of dribbling, you will be targetted.’

“The player is angry. But he has to get used to it. He even cried in the locker room. You have to get used to and know that you will be a target.

“He acknowledges his mistake and apologizes. Neymar is a humble player, but he is still learning.”
