Alves’ new role will see him promote equality and inclusion in football for those with intellectual disabilities.

“Football changed my life. It has opened more opportunities for me and has shaped me as a man,” he said.

“As an ambassador for the Special Olympics, I want to play my part in ensuring that more and more athletes with intellectual disabilities have the chance to transform their own lives through the joy of football.”

As part of the Special Olympics Global Football Programme, Alves will help with the aim to bring football to more than 1,000,000 people worldwide who suffer from intellectual disabilities.

He joins the likes of fellow Brazilians Kaka, Romario and Zico in supporting the Special Olympics, as well as Corinthians from the Campeonato Brasileiro.
