Three years after he completed his £9.5 million move to Munich from Sao Paulo, Breno’s future is much different to what it was meant to be.

Currently he is in a detention centre in Munich for supposedly torching his own house in the suburb of Grunwald due to psychological problems he is suffering at the moment. He is suffering with a recurring knee injury and according to reports coming out of Germany, he is also suffering family problems.

Hoeness believes it is wrong to arrest Breno who has struggled to adjust to the German style of life and has gave him his full support.

Hoeness said: “It is absurd to arrest a young man going through personal problems, does not even speak German and doesn’t have a passport!

“To put a man in jail who is suffering from these problems of depression amongst others is like taking the ground from under his feet. He could break…”

This story is being treated very carefully in Germany due to the recent memories of the suicide of goalkeeper Robert Enke in 2009. There was a lot of talk at the time about the lack of help for the former Germany international which lead him down a path which he thought he had no way out.

Breno is believed to be suffering from the same issues as Enke with him receiving counselling for marital problems, depression and suicidal thoughts. Depression is not uncommon for footballers in a game which has a lot of pressure on errors and mistakes.

He was believed to be at fault for a goal conceded against Inter Milan in May and after the game he gave a small interview to reporters.

He said after the 3-2 loss, ‘In Brazil, I had less money and luxury, but I was happy. Here I have money, but I lack everything.’ These words are especially prominent now considering the current situation as support grows for the recovery of the defender from his problems.
