Romario has announced he is to retire from professional football.

The 38-year-old claims the physical strain of playing has now become too much for him and is ready to hang up his boots.

“I will stop, I can’t give anymore,” the World Cup winner stated.

“I don’t feel strong enough to keep playing football anymore.”

The ex-Barcelona star – who has been without a team for the past two months after leaving Fluminense – plans to sign off with a friendly game between Vasco de Gama and Flamengo.

“I am going to hang up my boots in a match that will be played in the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, in which I will wear the shirts of both Vasco da Gama and Flamengo,” he continued.

“My idea is to play the first half with the shirt of Vasco da Gama and in the second half with the Flamengo shirt.

“These are the two most important teams that I have played for during my career, although I have played for some other very important clubs.”

Romario managed a total of 822 goals in 1000 games, and scored 65 for Brazil – second only to Pele in their all-time list.
