The coach showed great improvement on Saturday and talked with family members for a prolonged period of time. He has also undergone regualr sessions of physical and speech therapy with checks on his respiratory system going well.

According to a report released by the hospital, Gomes has been making ‘progressive clincal and neurological improvement.’

Gomes has been able to breathe without the help of devices since Thursday and he has shown a higher than expected recovery time than what was forecast by his doctors.

Miranda Fabio Guimaraes, one of the Doctors treating Gomes, believes the worst period of his illness has passed.

Guimaraes said: “We believe that the part of his illness with the greatest risk, the great severity, has already passed.

“However, it is too early to assess the level of improvement it has on his speech and movement, but he is interacting well with family and medical stuff.”
