The Chilean midfieidler tweeted yesterday about his desire to stay in the Green shirt saying he would be doing it for the fans.

Validivia later told the club’s website: “I have refused an exceptional proposal from Arab football for the happiness of staying with Palmeiras.”

There has been much debate over the future of Valdivia over the last week with a fall-out with manager Luis Felipe Scolari cited as a potential reason why he could be forced out of the club.

The board were reportedly ready to sell but it seems since Valdivia’s statement to the fans, the management at the club have changed their direction on the matter.

Club President Arnoldo Tirone said: “I thought he wanted to leave, but it seems that is not the case. I also thought he wanted out.

“He has now decided to stay, which we are happy about, as we never wanted him to leave.”

Among the reasons thrown around by the club and a section of the support to sell the midfielder was his injury record.

However, Valdivia has defended himself saying that if he could play, he would.

He added: “I’m not rotten. Other players like Luis Fabiano and Adriano suffer from recurrant injuries.

“Down to this, when I met with the club president Tirone, he said he wanted me to leave. But I wanted to stay.”

It was reported by several sources that Valdivia was going to be sold for around the £7 million mark to cover the debts Palmeiras currently have.
