It has emerged the former Corinthians star, who was discharged on the 27th August, is suffering from more bleeding and he has had to undergo an emergency procedure to stop the haemorrhage.

Socrates’ wife Katia Bagnarelli told the Brazilian press that doctors have struggled to operate on the stomach-related disorder caused by excessive alcohol consumption, which the 57-year old has previously admitted too.

Socrates told reporters after his previous discharge: “I’ve paid the price for alcohol abuse.

“Basically, the problem was caused by alcohol. The whole liver is inflamed and nothing is passing through it. It’s like a blood pump and it has to blow up somewhere – in this case, in my stomach.”

Socrates is one of Brazil’s most famous footballers of all time, captaining the 1982 and 1986 World Cup squads.

He has already been inducted into the Brazilian Football museum Hall of Fame and FIFA 100, despite him never winning a medal at the World Cup.

In 2004, he signed a one-month player-coach deal with Northern Premier League side Garforth Town and played one match for them against Tadcaster Albion, coming on for the last twelve minutes of the game.

He played sixty matches for the Selecao, scoring 22 goals.
