Renato left the club after Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Mineiro, with the club struggling against relegation in 19th place in the Brasileirão.

Now, Atletico have replaced him with Lopes, who takes over for a fifth spell in charge, having also been with the club in 2000, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

The 70-year-old was assistant manager to Luiz Felipe Scolari during Brazil’s triumphant 2002 World Cup campaign.

He won the 1998 Copa Libertadores and took Atletico to the final of the same competition in 2005.

Atletico are Lopes’ third club in 2011 alone, after Vitoria and America Mineiro. He has incredibly managed 25 clubs in a coaching career which has so far spanned 31 years.
