20 years ago at the tournament in Portugal, the two sides played out a goalless draw in front of an attendance of 127,000 at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, before Portugal won 4-2 on penalties to lift the trophy in front of delighted home support.

Future Brazil stars such as Roberto Carlos and Giovane Elber took part in the final, as did Portugal’s Luis Figo, Rui Costa and João Pinto.

Despite the lack of goals, Brazil Under-20’s current coach Ney Franco described the game as ‘beautiful’ and hoped that similar quality would be on show in tonight’s game.

“The final will be very interesting,” he said on Friday. “We hope to repeat the quality and become engraved in the history of world football.”
