The 33-year-old was keen to leave former club Marseille after being the victim of an armed robbery and has now joined Montpellier after having his contract mutually terminated.
He has signed a one-year contract with his new side after turning down offers from Evian, Brest and Monaco. The deal also includes the option for a further year.
Hilton first moved to France in 2004, and prior to joining Marseille he also played for Bastia and Lens. He has played almost 200 times in Ligue 1.
