The 19-year-old striker received some criticism for his performances at the recent Copa America, in which Brazil were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. However, he still managed to score two goals to take his record to five in nine appearances for the Seleção.

Now, Ramalho believes he can become Brazil’s star player, but says that Santos must be careful with how they use him. He hints that Neymar’s below-par displays in Argentina may have been down to being played out of position, on the left side of the attack.

“We must do a good job with this jewel in our team, because he will be decisive in 2014,” said Ramalho. “The aim has to be to win the World Cup. Everyone would be praised if Brazil won: the coach, the players, even those who weren’t selected.

“There is no need to worry about Neymar and his position,” he continued. “He must have a certain freedom in the game, but if you take him from one side and put him in the middle he is more likely to score. At Santos, he has a bit more freedom than with Brazil.”
