Milan took the lead after just three minutes with a goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Inter levelled on 23′ through Leandro Damiao, who once again impressed against top-class opposition after also scoring against Barcelona.
In the second half, Milan went ahead again on the hour with a goal from Seleção star and former Internacional player Alexandre Pato. With ten minutes remaining, Inter ensured that both their games in the competition would finish 2-2 thanks to an equaliser from Andres D’Alessandro.
With both sides having drawn their opening games on Tuesday, penalties were required for the third time in the tournament. Only two spot-kicks were successful, and they were both scored by Inter, with D’Alessandro and Nei ensuring the Brazilians avoided the wooden spoon.
Inter’s semi-final opponents Barcelona won the competition, beating hosts Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final. Both goals were scored by Thiago, son of Brazilian World Cup winner Mazinho.
