Brazil’s progress looked in doubt after drawing their opening two fixtures in Group B, but they recovered from their poor start to defeat Ecuador and finish top of the table. Pato, who scored twice in the win, said the performance was exactly what the team needed.

“It was the match we were all hoping for,” Pato said after the game. “It was crucial for us; we had to win no matter what. We went looking for a good result and we found it. We qualified and in first place, which is what we wanted.

“Here, when you win, everybody wins, and when you lose, everybody loses,” he continued. “It was an excellent game by the whole team. Everyone gave something extra which enabled a win and a great performance.”

The Seleção now face Paraguay in the quarter-finals on Sunday, and Pato stated that the hard work starts now. “It is time to work and forget about everything that has happened so far,” he said. “A new Copa America begins now.”
