Gilberto had been linked with a move to Botafogo, but announced yesterday that he would not be leaving. “I have never said I was unhappy here,” Goal.com quotes him as saying. “What I thought about was being a long way from my daughters. It wasn’t about the financial offer from Botafogo, it was about the distance from my daughters.

“Since 2001 I haven’t lived close to them, but I spoke to the president and he said some things that I could appreciate. I only returned to Cruzeiro in 2009 because he opened the doors to me. Out of gratitude to Zeze and because of the type of person he is, I decided to stay.

“I want to continue what I have been doing here and help the club lift the Campeonato Brasileiro trophy this year,” added Gilberto, who joined Cruzeiro two years ago after being released by Tottenham Hotspur. He had joined Spurs after four years and over 100 league appearances in Germany with Hertha Berlin, and had a brief spell at Internazionale.

He played 35 times for the Seleção between 2003 and 2010, including two appearances at last summer’s World Cup. He scored his only goal for the national side at the 2006 edition of the tournament, in a 4-1 group stage win against Japan, and was first choice left back for his country during the victorious 2007 Copa America campaign.
