Reports in the media are suggesting that Benfica central defender Luisao could be in line to grab a late selection to Brazil’s World Cup squad after impressing head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari recently.

The 33 year-old former Cruzeiro player has made 44 appearances for his national team but has not been in favour since Felipao resumed manager duties for the South Americans.

However, after a stirring display in the Europa League against Spurs in midweek, in which he scored a brace, the clamour to include double Conferderations Cup-winner Luisao is mounting.

Having not played for Brazil since 2010, a call-up would be somewhat surprising, given Scolari’s multitude to options in that area. Captain Thiago Silva, David Luiz and Dante are all certainties for selection, but the fourth centre back berth is not set in stone.

PSG’s Alex, as well as Brazilian domestic duo Dede and Doria, have also been linked with the role.
